About artist:

Revered by collectors, institutions, and artists alike, Alberto Burri is one of the most important abstract painters of the 20th century, thanks to his mastery of color, texture, and form. The Italian artist became famous for transforming unexpected materials—most famously burlap sacks, but also linen, plastic, sheet metal, and bark—into moving assemblages that he occasionally embellished with gold leaf, charred to haunting effect, or lashed with red paint. Burri’s work belongs in the collections of the Guggenheim and Museum of Modern Art in New York, Centre Pompidou in Paris, and Tate Modern in London, among other museums, and regularly sells for millions on the secondary market. Notably, Sacco E Rosso (ca. 1959)—considered one of Burri’s great masterpieces—sold for £9.1 million ($13.1 million) at auction in 2016.
