Recognized worldwide for his work and personality, Toledo is considered one of the greatest Mexican artists of the 21st century. He was a multidisciplinary artist, cultural promoter and social fighter in favor of indigenous people and the environment. Expert in painting, drawing, sculpting and engraving, he frequently imposed his non-rational interpretation of reality.

Through Rufino Tamayo, he managed to study in Paris and sell his first works. Having experienced the artistic avant-garde, his work began to have its own style and although he came to be associated with the Generation of Breakup, he always established his autonomous character.

Among the constant themes in his work are fantastic figures, human and animal, sex, insects, the study of eschatology and entomology, as well as Oaxacan traditions and culture. His work acts and raises plastic aspects, in it he proposes textures through shading with colors that generate immense sensory experimentation.

In 1988 he founded the Institute of Graphic Arts of Oaxaca and in 2005 he was awarded the Alternative Nobel Prize from the Swedish foundation Right Livelihood Award for his work in defense of cultural heritage. He has participated in numerous exhibitions worldwide and his work is part of the collections of the Museums of Modern Art in Mexico City, Philadelphia, New York and Paris, as well as the Tate Gallery in London and the Kunstnaneshus in Oslo, among countless others.
